This was an installation in a glass-walled gallery. I exhibited primarily paintings on transparent supports and drawings created in books. These works incorporate my everyday observations and my reflections on Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions into my art.
When viewing a painting, one looks at the picture plane—its surface texture, the composition as a whole, and the subjects and spaces depicted within it. However, when cataloging a work, a painting’s dimensions are expressed in three measurements: height, width, and depth. I was intrigued by the fact that a painting simultaneously possesses both a two-dimensional artistic nature and a three-dimensional physical nature. I also observed that while those interested in art tend to focus strongly on the two-dimensional aspects, those who are not particularly interested often view it more as a piece of interior decor. It was this gap that inspired my work.
Since the walls are transparent, you can peek into the gallery from the outside—both from the front and the back.

I had been working part-time measuring the dimensions of paintings, and after graduating from the painting department, I found myself in a new environment—a change from one where most people were painters. I had also been reading books on the concept of the “fourth dimension,” a topic that had long interested me. When I read this novel, I felt a connection between myself and the protagonist—an inhabitant of a two-dimensional world who cannot perceive three-dimensional existence—so I created this work because I wanted to see what the next higher dimension (the fourth dimension) might look like. Painting on transparent surfaces was one aspect of the experiment, but I also painted on books and mirrors. Books have a structure where you can’t see the artwork unless you open them, and mirrors inevitably reflect your image, so I thought it would be interesting to see the space depicted in the painting blend with the real space and the viewer looking at it, which is why I created these works.
